Metasequoia glyptostroboides
Description: Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood) is a fast growing tree in the conifer family Cupressaceae native to the Sichuan-Hubei region of China. Metasequoia, along with Sequoia, Sequoiadendron and several other genera, was transferred from the Taxodiaceae family to Cupressaceae using DNA analysis. It is the only living species in the ancient redwood genus Metasequoia, but three fossil species are known.

Foliage: Opposite, Linear, one inch long, Green, generally appearing two-ranked in flattened splays. When growing on deciduous branchlets the leaf-deciduous branchlets structure resembles a feathery pinnately (or bi-pinnately) compound leaf.

Fruit Cones: Box-like cones that hang on long stalks, round to cylindrical in shape, 1/2 to 1 inch long. Peltate shields contain small, winged seeds. Matures in December.
Texture: Fine evergreen like leaves that look like needles, sheds at the end of growing season. Tall and erect, makes a very nice shade tree with filtered shade.
Bark: Reddish brown, fibrous and stringy, develops an irregular fluted pattern, exfoliates in strips, rope-like in appearance

Soil Type: Prefers loose soil for first years development, and will withstand other soils, even depleted and low-grade soils after 2nd year. May be used as a shade Tree or street tree in difficult locations.

Propagation / Germination: Seed should be started in rich, loamy soil, either indoors or out. Water as needed, but do not over water. Set seeds in soil 1/4 to 1/8 inch and lightly cover. May be transplanted when 4 or more inches of growth have developed. Transplant to protected location for first season or two, then move to desired location.
Spacing: Grower dependent
Sun: Full to Partial Shade. Plants bloom best in sunny sites, but flowers last longer in shady sites.
Water: Average Water Needs; Water regularly; do not over water. Is drought tolerant after 3 to 5 years.
