Engelmann spruce, silver spruce, white spruce, mountain spruce, épinette d’Engelmann, pino real
Description: Engelmann Spruce is very similar to Colorado Blue Spruce. It grows moderately fast and reaches 150 feet. The Engelmann Spruce lives in northwestern California. It can tolerate lawn conditions and makes an excellent formal lawn tree. Engelmann Spruce likes part sun. The cones of the Engelmann spruce are small, one to three inches long. It has reddish-brown bark and short one inch needles.
Fruit: Cones 4 to 5 cm long
Needles: Less than 3 cm, rigid, 4 sided; tip flattened, acute. Needles 0.5 to 1 inch long; needles arranged evenly about the branch and diamond-shaped in cross-section; dark green or blue-green in color and with an objectionable smell when crushed.
Bloom Colors: Green, orange, purple
Bark: Gray to (occasionally) purple brown, thin, and relatively smooth with loosely attached scales.
Plant: Young branches pubescent; up to 50 meters tall. Bark used to make baskets, thatch the roofs of buildings, and cover canoes by the Thompson. Limbs and roots shredded, pounded, and used to make cord by the Hoh and Quileute.
Habitat: Cool, moist, mixed conifer and sub-alpine forest
Annual Growth Rate: Between 12 and 24 inches
Distribution of species: British Columbia to California mostly in the East Cascades, in the Rocky Mountains to New Mexico
Mature Height: 35′ to 70′ to 10.60m to 21.40m
USDA Zones: 2b to 6b
Watering Needs: Occasional water
Identifying Characters: Engelmann Spruce is characterized by cylindrical cones with elongate, thin, flexible cone scales with pointed apices. The needles are diamond-shaped in cross-section and even arranged around the twig. The overall shape of the tree is cone-shaped with a pointed apex.
Common Name: For George Engelmann. Spruce is an ancient name for this genus, related to “Prussia”
Discussion: In the Pacific Northwest, Engelmann Spruce grows along the east slope of the Coast Range from west central British Columbia, south along the crest and east slope of the Cascades through Washington and Oregon to northern California. It is a minor component of these high-elevation forests. Engelmann Spruce is a major component of the high-elevation Rocky Mountain forests, growing in the Rocky Mountains of southwestern Alberta, south through the high mountains of eastern Washington and Oregon, Idaho, and western Montana to western and central Wyoming, and in the high mountains of southern Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, eastern Nevada, New Mexico, and northern Arizona. Engelmann Spruce in parts of its range may be confused with White Spruce. The needles of White Spruce are concentrated on the upper side of the twig, but are evenly spread around in the twig in Engelmann Spruce. The cone scales of Engelmann Spruce are elongate and pointed at their apices, but those of White Spruce are broadly rounded or truncate.
